Homeopathy FAQ

Is Homeopathy Placebo?

Many people who are not educated about homeopathy believe that homeopathy pills are just sugar (placebo) pills. They don’t understand how homeopathic medicines are made, have not been educated on the scientific explanation of how our medicines work, and are not aware of the numerous scientific studies proving the effectiveness of homeopathy.

Meta-Analysis of Studies Prove that Homeopathy is more Effective than Placebo

Linde K, Clausius N, Ramirez G, et al. “Are the clinical effects of homoeopathy placebo effects? A meta-analysis of placebo-controlled trials.” Lancet 1997;350:834-43.
Meta-analysis of 89 trials of homeopathic medicine versus placebo. Result: significantly in favour of  homeopathy (OR 2,45 (95% CI 2,05-2,93)). This meta-analysis included 186 placebo-controlled  studies of homeopathy published until mid-1996, of which data for analysis could be extracted from 89. The overall odds ratio was 2.45 (95% confidence  intervals 2.05-2.93) in favour of homeopathy,  which means that the chances that homeopathy would benefit the patient were 2.45 times greater than  placebo. When considering just those trials of high quality published in MEDLINE listed journals, and  with predefined primary outcome measures, the pooled odds ratio was 1.97 and significant. Even after correction for publication bias the results remained  significant. The main conclusion was that the results “were not compatible with the hypothesis that the effects of homeopathy are completely due to placebo”. If the result of new trials were to show no difference between homeopathy and placebo, we would have to add 923 trials with no effect with 118 patients in each in order to balance the two.
Report to the European Commission directorate general XII: science, research and development. Vol 1 (short version). Brussels: European Commission, 1996:16-7.
HMRG report with overview of clinical research  in homeopathy, identified 184 controlled clinical  trials. They selected the highest quality randomized control trials, which included a total of 2617  patients for a meta-analysis. This meta-analysis resulted in a p-value of 0.000036 (which means that results are highly significant) indicating that homeopathy is more effective than placebo. The researchers concluded that the “hypothesis that  homeopathy has no effect can be rejected with certainty”. Homeopathic Medicine Research Group.
Placebo Effect in Homeopathy is Equal to Conventional Medicine

Nuhn T, Lüdtke R, Geraedts M (2010). Placebo effect sizes in homeopathic compared to conventional drugs – a systematic review of randomised controlled trials.Homeopathy, 99: 76–82

METHODS: We performed a systematic literature analysis on placebo-controlled double-blind RCTs on classical homeopathy. Each trial was matched to three placebo-controlled double-blind RCTs from conventional medicine (mainly pharmacological interventions) involving the same diagnosis. Matching criteria included severity of complaints, choice of outcome parameter, and treatment duration. Outcome was measured as the percentage change of symptom scores from baseline to end of treatment in the placebo group. 35 RCTs on classical homeopathy were identified. 10 were excluded because no relevant data could be extracted, or less than three matching conventional trials could be located.

RESULTS: In 13 matched sets the placebo effect in the homeopathic trials was larger than the average placebo effect of the conventional trials, in 12 matched sets it was lower (P=0.39). Additionally, no subgroup analysis yielded any significant difference.

CONCLUSIONS: Placebo effects in RCTs on classical homeopathy did not appear to be larger than placebo effects in conventional medicine.

Animal Studies Prove that Homeopathy is not Placebo

Homeopathy has been proven to have a positive effect on animals, who obviously cannot be influenced by the placebo effect.

Skin Conditions and Allergies

Homeopathy can do very well in cases where a doctor has not been able to make a disease diagnosis. It can also be helpful in cases of serious disease such as cancer, used alongside standard treatments.

Do You Treat Babies and Children?

Yes, the successful treatment of babies and children constitutes a large part of my practice. Homeopathy can treat a wide variety of children’s health complaints. Homeopathic treatment is completely non-toxic, so it can therefore be used safely on babies and children. Click here to learn more about the type of children’s health conditions that homeopathy can successfully treat.

I am one of only a handful of practitioners to offer homeopathic immunization consultations. For those parents who wish to immunize conventionally, I also offer a homeopathic program to detox the vaccines from your child’s system. Click here to learn more about alternative vaccine consultations.

I strongly believe that the earlier a child starts using homeopathy, the better. Once a parent starts relying on homeopathy for their children, they can start to rely less on traditional medicine. Many traditional methods of treating children, such as steroids creams for the skin or inhalers for asthma, will only suppress the child’s symptoms. Using traditional methods, the health problem typically will not go away, and over time it will probably get worse, requiring stronger and stronger pharmaceutical medications. Traditional medications also have side effects, whereas homeopathic medication has no side effects. Homeopathic medicines get to the root of the problem, and over time, the problem will subside.

I understand that in some cases it could be dangerous or life-threatening for your child to go off their standard pharmaceutical medications. In these cases I still encourage you to try homeopathy. Homeopathy can be taken along with standard medications since there are no drug interactions to worry about. Over time, when your child is doing well on his or her remedy, your MD may decide to decrease the amount of medications, or in some cases discontinue them altogether. No matter what your child’s situation is, their quality of life will improve from using homeopathy.

Will Homeopathy Interfere with my Medications?

No, it certainly will not interfere with your current medications in any way. You do not need to stop taking your regular pharmaceutical medications in order to benefit from homeopathic treatment. Pharmaceuticals can be taken along with your homeopathic remedy. There are no drug interactions of any kind between your pharmaceuticals and your homeopathic remedy. Homeopathy does not in any way interfere with the efficacy of pharmaceuticals.

However, pharmaceuticals can reduce the efficacy of homeopathy. This is why we ask you to reduce or stop pharmaceutical medications that are not necessary for your well-being. Of course, if you have a health condition that requires pharmaceutical treatment we would never ask you to discontinue those medications.

Do Homeopathic Medicines Have Side Effects?

No. Unlike pharmaceutical medications, our medicines have no side effects.

Reactions to our medicines can vary. Our medicines stimulate the body to heal itself. How the body goes about healing itself can vary from person to person. Some people have a very gentle response to our medicines. Over time, they gradually notice themselves getting better, until their health problems subside.

Other people have stronger reactions to our medicines. This strong reaction usually takes place if the person has a history of using pharmaceutical medications to suppress their symptoms. For example, a person with eczema who is used to using steroid cream may notice a flareup of their skin condition soon after taking their remedy. Homeopaths would take this flareup as a positive sign of healing, since it means that the body is expressing its symptoms instead of suppressing them. Once this initial flareup takes place after taking the homeopathic remedy, the flareup will eventually run its course and subside,  leaving the person with a stronger vitality and improved state of health.

Less healthy people may also potentially have strong reactions to our medicines, which is why we always commence treatment with the lowest strength remedies when treating babies, the elderly, and people with weakened vitality. This greatly reduces the chance of any unfavourable reactions to the homeopathic remedy. It is important to note that if any adverse reactions do occur after taking the remedy, the remedy can always be immediately antidoted; no long-term damage can occur from our remedies.

Do You Offer Online or Telephone Consultations?

Yes, I do offer telephone and online consultations. I find that telephone works best, but Skype can also work (unfortunately Skype does tend to cut out, making it difficult to communicate at times). If possible, it is always best for me to see you in person for the initial consultation and for the follow-ups. However, if you do not live in the Vancouver Lower Mainland, face-to-face consultations may not be practical for you. I am happy to accommodate your situation by offering telephone or Skype consultations. Coming soon: homeopathic email consultations.
