Flu Nosodes / Influenzinum

Influenzinum History of Use

For at least the past 150 years homeopathic practitioners have used the medicine Influenzinum as a flu preventive. Influenzinum is a homeopathic medicine (nosode) made from flu viruses, rendered completely safe and non-toxic by a homeopathic pharmacist. A nosode is the term for any homeopathic remedy that is made from disease material. Homeoprophylaxis is the term used for the homeopathic prevention of disease.

Scientific Research on Influenzinum

Between 1968-70, a survey conducted in Indian factories and offices compared the results of allopathic (conventional) vaccines and homeopathic prevention of influenza. The purpose of this survey was to determine the effectiveness of Influenzinum as a homeopathic preventative (prophylactic). Almost 20 percent of the patients treated by conventional medical physicians contracted the flu. Among those who used Influenzinum, only 6.5 percent came down with the disease. The homeopathic patients who did become ill, recovered more rapidly than their allopathically treated patients. The number of working days lost by the allopathically treated patients was nearly eight and a half times greater than those lost by homeopathic patients.

In 1998 the French Society of Homeopathy conducted a survey of 23 homeopathic doctors concerning their use of Influenzinum as a flu preventive (Coulamy, 1998). The survey included use of Influenzinum over a 10 year period (1987-1998) in 453 patients. Results of the survey were remarkable. In approximately 90 percent of the cases no instances of the flu occurred when Influenzinum was used preventatively.

Recent Research on Influenzinum and Oscilococcinum

A Brazilian study published in 2021 in the International Journal of High Dilution Research reviewed the literature on the treatment of flu with biotherapics used in clinical medicine, namely Influenzinum and Oscilococcinum. Studies on the prescription of biotherapics for the prevention and cure of the flu as well as literature about the history and evolution of Homeopathy were reviewed. Preliminary results showed that both medicines are widely used in clinical medicine. Influenzinum 9CH is prescribed for flu prevention and treatment, while Oscilococcinum is more used to reduce the severe symptoms in patients who already have the flu. The authors conclude “Based on these results, it is possible to say that Influenzinum has a very important role in the prevention and cure of the influenza and Oscilococcinnum is useful in the relief of the symptoms caused by this disease.”

Influenzinum Consultations Offered at the Clinic

Flu homeoprophylaxis consultations are offered at the clinic. I use a high potency of Influenzinum 1M obtained from Helios Pharmacy in England. The Helios remedy must be taken once per month until the end of the flu season. It is taken by mouth and comes in the form of sugar pellets. It is safe and effective for pregnant women and children of any age, including babies.

The Boiron product Influenzinum 9C is widely available in pharmacies, supplement and health food stores. Homeocan also carries Influenzinum. Some clients have found that the Homeocan and Boiron brands of Influenzinum are not very effective because the remedies are sourced from the regular influenza vaccine, whereas the Helios Influenzinum is sourced from actual influenza viruses. Plus the Boiron brand of Influenzinum 9C is low potency, so you would have to take it once a week for 6 months for it to be protective, which is time-consuming and costly.

Homeopathic Thymuline

Thymuline is a homeopathic remedy made from the thymus gland. The thymus is responsible for producing white blood cells, which defend us against many types of infections; the thymus also produces other hormones that enhance the immune system overall. Homeopaths have a history of using Thymuline to boost immunity during the change of seasons, during periods of stress, and in case of slow or difficult recovery from illness. A recent study done on mice proves that Thymuline has a strengthening effect on the immune system. In the fall and winter months, Thymuline and Influenzinum form the best natural flu protection package recommended by complementary and alternative health practitioners. During allergy season, Thymuline supports the health of mucous membranes and bronchial tubes.

Constitutional Treatment for a Weakened Immune System

Please note that for people with chronic health conditions and/or chronically weak immune systems, constitutional homeopathic treatment is strongly recommended. Nosodes can safely be used in conjunction with constitutional homeopathic remedies.

“Sonya at Little Mountain Homeopathy has provided us with homeopathic remedies for 2 years running. Our family has been healthy and grateful to have avoided the many illnesses that can accompany flu season, especially with school age children.
