Homeopathy for Measles

In the early stage, symptoms of measles resemble a bad cold: cough, nasal discharge and fever. These symptoms are accompanied by watery red eyes with sensitivity to light. A few days later, small white spots appear inside the mouth, followed by the classic measles rash: light-red spots on the face and neck. Over the next few days, the rash spreads over the abdomen, back, legs and feet.

Commonsense precautions: Make sure the child receives enough liquids. Keep the lights dimmed. Research has shown that giving supplemental Vitamin A will reduce the risk of complications from measles infection.

Since the 1800s, homeopathic Aconitum Napellus 30C has been used successfully to treat measles in the beginning stage. Use this remedy when the child appears restless and symptoms have come on suddenly.

Belladonna 30C is also useful at the beginning stage of measles infection. Characteristic symptoms calling for this remedy include a red face, throbbing headache and perspiration on the face from the fever. There may also be delirium from the fever, twitching and sleeplessness.

Gelsemium 30C is a good remedy to use if the measles symptoms have come on slowly. The child will feel extremely tired and will often have difficulty with opening their eyes. They may also have watery discharge from the nose that burns the upper lip.

Euphrasia 30C is a good remedy to use for measles if there profuse bland watery discharge from the nose and burning watery eyes. The eyes are very red and sensitive to light.

Pulsatilla 30C is a very good remedy to try for the later stage of measles once the fever has subsided. Nasal discharge is thick and yellowish. The child often feels worse from heat and has little thirst.

Dosage: Give 3 pellets of the indicated homeopathic remedy 3-4 times per day. The remedy may have to be changed as the symptoms progress.

Note that this is not an exhaustive list of homeopathic remedies for measles. Homeopathic treatment of measles is best conducted under the care of a qualified classical homeopath.
